Both Andrew and I have been walking around the house humming random tunes over the last few weeks. Far more than normal, so I can only put that down to feeling healthier and happier in mind and spirit. So, it got me thinking, what ten tunes would I pick for my Canbace Life Sound Track and why?
Here they are, together with a few of the lyrics and the obligatory YouTube video. You don’t think I would leave you to search the internet yourself, did you?
Pretty Flamingo – Manfred Man
Well there would be something seriously wrong if it wasn’t in my Canbace Sound Track. What’s really lovely is that when we went to market yesterday Andrew stopped to let me go first through a small gap. I walked ahead of him for a short while and he started whistling the tune although we hadn’t played it for over a week. Must be my new pink hair!
“Cause her hair glows like the sun
And her eyes can light the skies
When she walks she moves so fine
like a flamingo”
Search for the hero – M People
This song has always resonated with me because of the idea that we have a hero inside ourselves. Now that I am Canbace I love the idea that searching for my inner hero will help me find the key to my life.
“You’ve got to search for the hero inside yourself,
Search for the secrets you hide.
Search for the hero inside yourself
Until you find the key to your life.”
Dancing Queen – Abba
To remind me to dance like no one is watching!
“You can dance
You can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl
Watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen”
Walking on Sunshine – Katrina and the waves
I don’t think there are any particular lyrics in this song that are pertinent to being Canbace. I simply love the vibrancy and sheer joy of it.
“I’m walking on sunshine (Wow!)
I’m walking on sunshine (Wow!)
I’m walking on sunshine (Wow!)
And don’t it feel good
Hey, alright now
And don’t it feel good, hey”
Dignity – Deaon Blue
There have always been boats in my family. My grandfather was one of the first people to convert a working narrowboat into a leisure craft, whilst my father ran a canal boat holiday company before Hoeseasons cornered the market I expect that’s partly why living on a boat and sailing wherever the wind takes me has always appealed.
“And I’ll sail her up the west coast,
Through villages and towns
I’ll be on my holidays
They’ll be doing their rounds
They’ll ask me how I got her I’ll say “I saved my money”
They’ll say isn’t she pretty that ship called dignity”
On Top of the World – Carpenters
When you think of the love mentioned in this beautiful song as the love you can find for yourself when you Canbace, I think this must be the ultimate “Canbace Life Sound Track”.
“I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world”
I will now be singing this to WEEKS!
We are the champions – Queen
Living in a child-centric world is certainly no bed for roses and every single one of us who has battled our way through being CNBC to come out the other side to embrace Canbace IS a champion. And we we’ll keep on fighting ‘til the end to help those people who are still struggling to find their path to healing and acceptance.
“We are the champions, my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions of the world”
Forever Young – Pretenders
When I listen to this now I feel it is an anthem to my spirit which has not be broken by my journey.
“May God’s bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay
May you stay forever young”
Eternal Flame – The Bangles
If “Forever Young” is my anthem to my unbroken spirit, then this is my promise to the children that I loved yet never got to hold.
“Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling
Do you feel my heart beating
Do you understand?
Do you feel the same
Am I only dreaming
Is this burning an eternal flame?”
All Women – Lisa Stansfield
A reminder that, despite not being a mother, that I am ALL WOMAN and that in my second husband, Andrew, I found a man who respects and loves me for who I am!
“I may not be a lady
But I’m all woman
From Monday to Sunday I work harder than you know
I’m no classy lady
But I’m all woman
And this woman needs a little love
To make her strong
You’re not the only one”
What would be in your Canbace Sound Track and why?
In CANBACE friendship!
If anything I have written resonates I’d love to hear from you in the comments. I appreciate that this can be a difficult subject to speak openly about so if you don’t want me to publish your comment on the website please let me know and I will keep your words private.

“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor! 🙂
Nicci Fletcher
Most definitely! I’m already thinking I need to come up with my “Canbace Life Greatest Hits” in a couple of weeks. I remembered “I WILL Survive” and a few other obviously ones almost the moment I published this.
